Advanced spider and surface vein removal in Geelong
Leg vein treatments
Walk in, walk out treatment
Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin, typically on the legs. They are extremely common and can develop due to genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, prolonged standing or simply the natural ageing process.
Visit our expert doctors at Geelong Veins Skin & Laser to discover how easy it can be to remove your spider veins.

How spider vein treatment works
The most effective spider vein treatment for the legs is sclerotherapy. This involves a series of very small injections using a fine needle to deliver a medicated solution directly into the unwanted vein. The solution causes the vein wall to collapse and the vein to be gradually reabsorbed by the body. Both legs can be treated in the same appointment.
For very fine veins, or veins in areas other than the legs such as the face, chest or back, vascular laser treatment may be recommended instead. Laser targets the vein using focused light energy, causing it to close and fade without any injections.
Both methods are quick, effective, and require no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities immediately after their appointment, including a 30 minute walk, which is actively encouraged following sclerotherapy.
Who it’s for
Spider vein treatment is for patients of any age with visible spider or surface veins seeking a non-surgical solution to improve the appearance of their legs and prevent symptoms or complications of vein disease.
Preparation
Your first appointment at GVSL will involve a comprehensive assessment of your leg veins and general health.
On the day of leg spider vein treatment you need to:
- Wear comfortable loose clothing
- Expect to attend the clinic for 30-60 minutes then go for a 30 minute walk immediately afterward
- Don’t apply moisturiser to your legs
- Bring your compression stockings if you have already been fitted for them
Aftercare
- Medical compression stockings need to be worn for 3-7 days following spider vein treatment
- Patients are advised to walk for 30 minutes daily
- Hot / sweaty exercise, saunas, and swimming should be avoided for the time you are wearing the stockings
- Flights >4 hours should not be completed within 4 weeks of treatment
The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing only minor discomfort, similar to a pinprick or a warm sensation.
Patients may require between 2 to 5 treatments spaced 4 weekly depending on the number and extent of their spider veins. You will be given an estimate at your initial assessment.
Hot / sweaty exercise, saunas, and swimming should be avoided for the time you are wearing the compressions stockings. Flights >4 hours should not be completed within 4 weeks of treatment
Treated veins are unlikely to return, but new veins can develop over time. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to keep your skin clear.
Spider veins are caused by weakened or damaged valves within the veins. This can occur due to factors like genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, prolonged periods of standing or sitting, and the natural aging process. These factors contribute to blood pooling in the veins, leading to their visible appearance on the skin.
While it’s not possible to completely prevent spider veins, certain lifestyle changes can reduce your risk or slow their development. Regular exercise, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding extended periods of standing can all help support healthy vein function and prevent the worsening of spider veins.
Spider veins are often considered a cosmetic concern, but they can also indicate underlying venous issues. In some cases, they may lead to discomfort, such as aching or heaviness in the legs, and if left untreated, could potentially result in more serious complications such as DVT, dermatitis and skin ulcers.
The most common treatments for spider veins include sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the veins to close them off, and laser therapy, which uses focused light to cause the veins to collapse and fade. Both treatments are minimally invasive and designed to effectively reduce the appearance of spider veins.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during spider vein treatments. The sensation is often described as small pin pricks. Procedures like sclerotherapy and laser therapy are generally well-tolerated, and topical anesthesia can be used to ensure your comfort during the treatment.
Recovery time after spider vein treatment is typically short. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately following the procedure. However, it’s important to follow any aftercare instructions provided by your doctor, such as wearing compression stockings and avoiding strenuous activities, to ensure the best possible outcome.
