Vein & vascular issues

Varicose vein removal

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear in the legs and affect many adults in Geelong and surrounding areas. They develop when the valves inside the veins stop working properly, causing blood to pool and the veins to become stretched and visible under the skin.

At Geelong Veins Skin & Laser, we assess and manage varicose veins in Geelong using a detailed clinical approach to understand both the appearance and underlying cause of your vein condition.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a sign that blood is not flowing efficiently through the veins in the legs. When vein valves become weak or damaged, blood can flow backwards and collect in the vein, causing it to enlarge and become visible.

They most commonly appear as:

Bulging, rope-like veins under the skin
Blue, purple or dark green veins
Twisted or raised veins on the legs
Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern. In many cases, they are associated with underlying venous insufficiency that may worsen over time without appropriate assessment.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Causes

Most patients with varicose veins have a genetic / family history.

Other factors that increase the likelihood of getting abnormal veins are:

  • Pregnancies
  • Smoking
  • Age
  • Jobs involving standing still

Varicose vein symptoms

Varicose veins are veins > 3mm in diameter with back flow or reflux. They appear as swollen, lumpy, twisted, tortuous, bulging veins in either clusters or lines. They occur mostly in the legs or thighs, but can affect pelvis or arms (and if so require investigation for a cause of constriction).

Treatments

We utilise the latest varicose vein treatment technology, including Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) , Endovenous RadioFrequency Ablation (EVRF), Vein Glue and Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy. These minimally invasive procedures close off refluxing / abnormal veins, allowing your body to naturally reroute blood flow through healthier veins. Most treatments are completed in under an hour, with patients typically resuming normal activities shortly afterwards.

FAQ
Who performs varicose vein treatments at GVSL?

Our specialist doctor – Dr Amit Lakkaraju.

Dr Lakkaraju is an interventional radiologist with extensive experience and expertise in treating all sizes and types of varicose veins. A referral is required to see Dr Lakkaraju. This can be obtained from your GP or one of our onsite GPs.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the treatment, with some reporting a mild tingling or warmth as the veins are treated. Local anaesthetic is injected prior to the vein injections.

How quickly can I return to normal activities?

Most patients can resume light activities immediately after treatment, with a full return to normal activities the following day.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Treated veins can develop a bruised colour or lumpy appearance and feel. These veins will dissolve away over the following weeks. You’ll notice gradual improvement in the appearance and comfort of your legs over this time. Wearing compression stockings as directed will aid in this process.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects may include bruising, swelling, or slight discomfort at the treatment sites. Occasionally brown discolouration from iron in the blood can appear on the skin as the vein fades away. This may take a little longer to disappear completely. Vein treatments are a medical procedure with other rare risks and complications. These will be discussed individually at your initial consultation. Vein disease left untreated also has its risks.

How common are varicose veins in Geelong?

Varicose veins are a very common vein condition, affecting a large proportion of adults at some point in their lives. They develop when vein valves weaken over time, allowing blood to flow backwards and pool, which causes the vein to stretch and bulge.

While varicose veins are often considered a cosmetic concern, they can also cause aching, heaviness and swelling, and in some cases indicate underlying venous disease. An ultrasound assessment with our vein specialist will determine the extent of the condition and the most appropriate treatment.

Are varicose veins dangerous?

Varicose veins are not always dangerous, but they can indicate underlying vein disease. If left untreated, symptoms may worsen over time, leading to increased discomfort or more noticeable vein changes.

A professional vein assessment helps determine whether your varicose veins are purely cosmetic or part of a broader venous condition.
