Freezing with liquid nitrogen
Medical skin treatments
Remove skin tags, warts or actinic keratosis
Our skin doctors and dermal clinicians use cryotherapy to treat several skin complaints. It can be applied with a swab, tweezers, pen or a gun depending on the type of lesion and depth required.
What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin and destroy a skin lesion. The liquid nitrogen is applied directly and precisely to the skin to selectively remove the skin tag / wart / sun spot without causing damage to surrounding tissue.
What skin spots can be treated with cryotherapy?
- Skin tags
- Warts
- Actinic Keratoses (pre cancerous sun damage spots that commonly occur on the face and hands / forearms)
Preparing for your appointment
No preparation is required prior to your cryotherapy session, although it is important to have the lesions in question diagnosed by a doctor.
Post-treatment guidelines
- Keep the area clean and dry
- A bandaid / dressing may be needed from day 2 for a few days
Usually the lesion will resolve without a scar but occasionally a paler/white flat mark may occur.
Cryotherapy feels like a sharp, very cold localised sting.
Actinic keratoses (sun damage spots that are raised and rough/flaky, pink/white ) are pre cancerous. Some may grumble along and not cause issues or be resolved by your body, but around 5% will eventually develop into a SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma) type of skin cancer.
