Medical compression stockings are a simple yet highly effective tool in the prevention and management of a range of venous and lymphatic conditions. At Geelong Veins Skin & Laser, we often recommend compression therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to support healthy circulation, reduce symptoms of swelling/pain/bruising, prevent DVT, treat lymphoedema, and assist in the treatment of leg veins before/between and after treatment.

What Are Medical Compression Stockings?

Medical compression stockings are specially designed garments that apply graduated pressure to the legs—meaning the pressure is strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases up the leg. This design helps encourage blood flow back toward the heart, reducing pooling in the veins.

Unlike standard “support socks,” medical-grade compression stockings are carefully measured and prescribed based on your individual needs, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.

How Do They Work?

Healthy veins rely on small valves to keep blood moving upward against gravity. When these valves become weakened or damaged, blood can pool in the legs, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Swelling (oedema)
  • Aching or heaviness
  • Skin changes or irritation

Compression stockings gently squeeze the legs, which:

  • Improves circulation
  • Reduces swelling
  • Supports vein function
  • Helps prevent further progression of vein disease

Who Can Benefit from Compression Stockings?

Compression therapy may be recommended for a variety of individuals, including those who:

  • Experience leg swelling or fatigue
  • Are pregnant
  • Sit or stand for long periods
  • Are travelling long distances (e.g. flights)
  • Have a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Have lymphoedema or lipoedema

Our doctors at Geelong Veins Skin & Laser will assess your symptoms and medical history to determine the most appropriate compression level for you.

Types and Compression Levels

Compression stockings come in different strengths, typically measured in mmHg (millimetres of mercury):

  • Mild (8–15 mmHg): Everyday support and prevention, standing jobs
  • Moderate (15–20 mmHg): Mild varicose veins, travel, DVT prevention
  • Firm (20–30 mmHg):Varicose veins, swelling, post-treatment, vein ulcers, treatment of DVT
  • Extra firm (30–40 mmHg): More advanced venous conditions, post thrombotic syndrome, severe oedema, requires normal ABI/no PAD, requires medical supervision.

Choosing the correct level is important—too little may be ineffective, while too much may be uncomfortable or unsafe without proper guidance.

Tips for Wearing Compression Stockings

To get the most benefit from your compression stockings:

  • Put them on first thing in the morning before swelling develops
  • Ensure a smooth fit without wrinkles
  • Wear them consistently as advised by your clinician
  • If worn everyday – replace them every 3–6 months as elasticity reduces over time

Are They Comfortable?

Modern compression stockings are far more comfortable and discreet than many people expect. They are available in a variety of styles, colours, and fabrics, making them suitable for everyday wear.

When to Seek Advice

While compression stockings are generally safe, they are not suitable for everyone. It’s important to seek professional advice if you have:

  • Peripheral arterial disease or risk factors for PAD (hypertension, raised cholesterol, age>65, smoker, diabetes)
  • Severe skin conditions with broken skin or infections
  • Uncontrolled heart failure / leg swelling without a diagnosed cause

At Geelong Veins Skin & Laser, we provide personalised fittings and guidance to ensure your compression therapy is both safe and effective.

We have ABI testing – a screening test for Peripheral Arterial Disease, which involves blood pressure measurement of the arms and legs simultaneously.

Supporting Your Vein Health

Compression stockings are often just one part of a broader treatment approach. Depending on your condition, we may also recommend lifestyle changes or advanced vein treatments to address underlying issues.
